Music has been invariably elucidated throughout history altering the definition of what is considered melodic, and revolutionizing the manner in which pieces are composed and one of the most prominent periods of musical transformations was the 17th century. It was during these influential times in which music was subjected to the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, both signifying turbulent times for the church and both fundamental in the salvation of polyphonic musical composition as we know it today. Composer John Jenkins’s Fantasia is a prime example of a piece born on the scrupulous limitations of this era. Fantasia No. 13 is a piece scored for chordophones, most particularly a string quartet with double bass, the arrangement…
Perhaps one of the most attractive qualities of this composer is not simply the sound of his music, but how he achieves his sound: by combing tradition and trends from music history with a yearning to create something different. This paper has exemplified how music that might be labeled as conventional or antiquated can inspire groundbreaking new works. Students…
“Good luck out there. Should you need to vomit, please do so away from the piano,” quipped the competition organizer. Out of all the days I could have woken up feverish and dizzy, it just had to be March 27, 2011, the day of the piano competition. Playing the piano for an unwelcoming panel of stone-faced adjudicators when everything I saw seemed to spin round-and-round was the last thing I wanted to do.…
(Bonds) Copland’s music career spanned through most of his life and about five different genres. There were his Ballets, ‘Billy the Kid’ and ‘Rodeo’, and his orchestral works, such as ‘Appalachian Spring’ and ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’. He wrote in the songs genre, with pieces such as ‘The Twelve Poems of Emily Dickenson’ and ‘Old American Songs’. His chamber pieces were ‘Piano Variations’ and ‘Vitebsk’.…
However, teachings in composition and music theory were under the guidance of Rubin Goldmark, “an old-fashioned teacher...against whom Copland rebelled” (Naxos, 3). During that time, Aaron was charmed with Scriabin, Debussy and Ives as he battered New York’s open libraries for the newest American and European scores. Finally, Aaron’s fantasy of studying in Paris came to achievement (1921-4) taking piano lessons from Ricardo Vines and learning compositions with Nadia Boulanger. While in Paris, his European explorations opened him to a big variety of music styles; yet, with the inspiration of Boulanger, he was effective in producing his single compositions that became expressions of Americanism. Copland’s musical skills went past his composition; he was also a skillful conductor, author, teacher and pianist.…
After his arrival from Paris, he worked with jazz rhythms in Music for the Theater (1925) and the Piano Concerto (1926). There took after a period amid which he was firmly affected by Igor Stravinsky's Neoclassicism, moving in the direction of a conceptual style he portrayed as "more extra in resonation, more lean in surface." This standpoint won in the Piano Varieties (1930), Short Ensemble (1933), and Articulations for Symphony (1933– 35). After this last work, there happened an alter of course that was to introduce the most gainful period of Copland's vocation. Copland along these lines was directed to what turned into a most noteworthy advancement after the 1930s: the endeavor to rearrange the new music all together that it would have significance for a huge…

World War II spanned the years of 1939-1945 and made a substantial impact on the dance world. In finding sources to apply towards researching World War II’s influence on Appalachian Spring (1944), I immediately went to YouTube. The iconic film of Appalachian Spring is a great tool to use when looking at the choreography, set, costumes, and musical score. The set, designed by Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) is very simple, but is highlighted by it’s functionality of one side of an exterior wall, a bench, fencing, a wooden chair, and a slanted boulder in the yard (Aloff 26). Martha Graham (1894-1991) whose choreography in this particular piece is very pedestrian, meant to simulate a very common American tale.…
The existing structure of the music as such the duration of the note, step, balance, and tone color are emphasized in this part of the essay. This fundamental study of the structure is a must to form a having a solid foundation in the musical segment and to realize the diagnosis of it. This technical and more theoretical plane is inconsistent to the philosophical sensuous plane. consequently, it is another good technique of Copland to set down one right after another to cover the entire listening process. from this statement, I think that there is an unpleasant emotion caused by the losing the expressive plane, if this situation triggers.…
Polyphony is widely used in this piece which can be heard when the two violas in the first movement are accompanied by other instruments. The final Allegro is heard to be much faster than the preceding movements. This type of piece was unusual during Bach’s period because usually the violin was given a bigger preference. However, Bach chose to give the viola and cello difficult…

Such movements are usually regarded as consisting of a slow dotted section followed by a fugue, but many can also be viewed as sort of binary form. Often the second half is, as here, a fugue in concerto style having little in common with the first half. Yet the tonal structure is that of a binary…
As the production of art songs among modernist composers faded, the young Samuel Barber was just getting his start as a composer, first gaining recognition in 1928 after winning the Bearns award for a violin sonata, and then again in 1931 with his Overture for The School for Scandal. 12 In the years that followed, Barber became a prolific song composer, anchoring his style in the Romantic traditions developed during the heyday of the European art song. Though judged by critics as “conservative,” Barber’s prowess at song composition was enhanced by his Romantic influences. Returning to the understanding of art song as developed by Parry and Upton, it is apparent that the method defined is how Barber approached the composition of his songs: he consistently showcased the…
