I would have to disagree, as I do not find Liszt to be "underrated". Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony may be the one everyone seems to prefer more often than usual, but that does not mean it is far more engaging than Liszt’s transcription. Each one has its strengths and faults. Beethoven manages to express the heroic proportions to it; while Liszt, compared to the full orchestral version, manages to work very well in adding a greater lyrical quality to the work on the piano.…
This paper will describe and critique a listening reaction to Hildegard Von Bingen’s “O Successores” and describe the use of timbre, pitch, melody, and rhythm to name a few examples. In addition, the introduction will discuss the work of the creator, the historic era, and give a general description of the background of this Gregorian chant. Furthermore, the aesthetic value of the work will be evaluated and questions will be answered to what was attractive, meaningful, and inspiring and what my personal thoughts and reactions are on this valuable masterpiece. 1.6 Assignment: Listening/Viewing Reaction 1 Introduction Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), was born in Germany and was the tenth child of a large family. “At the birth of their tenth daughter, they decided to follow the custom then practiced of giving their tenth child over to the service of God when she reached a suitable age” and at the young age of 8 Hildegard who often was sick was “delivered into the care of Jutta von Spanheim, a relative who served as abbess of a…
Centuries ago, there were great musicians and composers who laid the foundations of music and brought music into a whole new perspective and meaning. Some of the greatest musical composers were Barrios Mangoré, Isaac Albéniz, Franz Schubert, and Johann Strauss. Because of them, we are able to create music and expressively play music, offering us the freedom of making it our own. Today, there are the following musicians who carry on the legacies of those four composers through their own playing: Manuel Barrueco, Ana Vidovic, Joshua Bell, and Kathleen Battle. This paper aims to describe the four performers and to identify and summarize the lives of the past composers of the music pieces performed by the four musicians.…
Is it possible to recreate a historical event through music? Daniel Bukvich attempts this very feat in his piece Symphony No.1(In Memoriam, Dresden, 1945). This piece of music has been the topic of many discussions in the musical world, and I’m sure that it would be a hot topic in the philosophy world as well. In particular, I think that Aristotle and Leo Tolstoy would have a lot to say about this piece. Aristotle’s definition of art focuses on humans’ ability to mimic real life and create a spectacle that causes certain emotions, like fear, to arise in the audience.…
Through many examples of music from many different backgrounds, I have come to realize and appreciate the diversity present in the world of music. When I was asked to select one piece of music to analyze, I was faced with a difficult decision. It was challenging for me to decide on one piece of music that I could analyze given the abundance of music. After many countless hours of searching for one piece of music that I could focus my time on to analyze, I selected a piece named October by Eric Whitacre. Eric Whitacre is a Grammy-winning American composer and conductor.…
The Baroque and Classical eras of music were both amazing periods full of musical genius and ingenuity that has made them go down in history as some of the most influential time periods for music composition. Among some of the most praised and defining pieces from those time periods include Dido’s “Lament” from Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” from the Baroque period, while pieces such as “Queen of The Night” from W.A Mozart’s “Magic Flute” exemplify the Classical period. These pieces both exhibit exemplary musical qualities from their respective musical periods, and comparing and contrasting these two works will illuminate the magnificence of each period. Baroque music was a new art style that emphasized tonality. This is significant because of…

Partita no.4 in D major, BWV 828 The fourth partita, whose original title page was dated 1728, is the most splendid of the partitas. Three or four movements – the overture, courante, gigue and perhaps the minuet – evoke orchestral style, but the remainder are intimate and highly expressive. The overture is of the same type found in the orchestral suites of Bach.…
Through the combination of this documentary, “The Great White Way” and “Showtime, I was exposed to information that made me question my definition of a musical. I was also forced to explore how the musical developed from its origins into what we know as the modern musical of today. My first discovery was that the musical is a distinctly “Americanized” art form and as such it is became a key part of American cultural movements that would follow the Revolutionary war. After gaining our independence as a country we moved to reject a great deal of our European culture and were then forced to create a new distinct American culture with its own art forms and practices. In order to determine how this process occurred specifically within live performance…
In Beethoven’s string quartet Op. 18 No. 4, there is the implication that the first movement sonata form has indeed been emancipated from the looming tyranny of the minor key and that the movement will, in fact, end in C major as opposed to C minor. In measure 194, the ESC is presented as a strong C major chord which should indicate the emancipation of the movement; however, this is not the case. As the closing material quickly continues, E-flats are reintroduced signaling that the outcome of the struggle between major and minor has not yet been decided. Beginning in measure 202, the cello has a prominent chromatic line covering an octave between A-flats signifying the rise to victory.…

Bach’s masterpiece displays not only his mastery of the orchestra and choir, but also showcases his intense belief in Christ as savior of the world. Bach was a devout Christian throughout all of his life and this shines through in his work, especially in his more spiritual compositions. In his oratorio three especially distinct features come to the foreground that help to build up its Christianity: one, word-painting, especially in the more intense movements; two, by making the chorus, along with the instruments, more unified or chaotic Bach highlights the calamity or confusion that is happening; third, at the end of the work Bach descends into deeper, darker music that, even without the vocal accompaniment, conveys the gravity of what has…
Both of these composers had a major influence on the periods of music that followed them. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was “a musician capable of playing of playing multiple instruments who started playing in public at…
Listening Assignment One Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra is known to be a beautiful piece of art. Upon doing some research, Henry Purcell was Benjamin’s influencer in creating this music. It was all built on the second movement of the, “Rondeau”, of the Abdelazer suite. However, originally it was meant for an educational documentary film. Benjamin started at a very young age and had many of mentors through his career.…
