In 1981, a very smart salesman and family man from San Francisco, CA named Christopher Gardner spends the family savings on "Bone scanning devices ". However, these scanners do not sell. As Gardner tries to figure out how to sell them, he financially breaks the family. He soon loses his house, his bank account, and credit cards, which brings troubles to his relationship with his wife who eventually leaves him. Their son stays with his dad because he and his wife both know that their son is better off with the dad. He is forced to live out in the streets without any money or a wife, nonetheless he is committed to his son. He sees a chance to fight for a stockbroker internship position at a major corporate organization but before he can earn a paycheck, he needs to go through 6 months of unpaid training. Mind you, he is competing with nineteen other candidates for the same position. During this period, he goes through a lot of personal hardship as he is and his son are reduced to homelessness and forced at one point to stay in a bathroom at a train station. Which meant he had to scramble from work every day to a church that offered shelter to the homeless, however he and his son had to arrive there by 5:00pm every day. If they were not there, that meant they were not guaranteed a place to sleep for the night.
