From one cell to two-hundred different kinds of cells. Cell differentiation is the process of a cell changing from one cell type to another in developmental biology. In this process stem cells are used. A stem cell is a cell that has the ability to continuously divide and differentiate into various other kinds of cells or tissues. The process of differentiation results from the protein make-up of a cell. The blueprints for making these proteins are found in the nucleus of each cell as DNA; thus, the starting point of differentiation is in the nucleus which contains all the guidance to make all of the cell type collection. During cell differentiation, genes are turned on and off which determines what kind of cell it is or what it functions as. The zygote that is produced through the union of sperm and egg cells undergoes cell division and tissue development during cleavage, blastula formation, and gastrulation. A blastula is the end product of cleavage; it is a hollow ball assembled from an expanding group of dividing cells. When the blastula begins to collapse inward, gastrulation begins. Inside the hollow ball is a gastrula cup-shaped pocked. This ball is now called a gastrula. The cells of the now called gastrula advance and divide. Cells can differ in their potency. Their potency characterizes the range to which their offspring can be of different cell types. Cells lose potency as they differentiate.
