In the two stories “A Pair of Silk Stocking” by Kate Chopin and “A&P” by John Updike, there seems to be a common theme among both of them. In the two stories both the main characters seem to struggle between individual impulse and responsibility. We can see both Mrs. Sommers from “A Pair of Silk Stockings” and Sammy from “A&P” struggling with it throughout the story, this is present to the reader through their actions.
In the stories, we know that both of the characters share a common class. The both find themselves in the working class. In “A&P” Sammy is working at the local grocery store. When he is working we see a group of girls that walked into the store wearing only their bathing suits, and no shoes. The three girls were at the store to buy herring snacks for “queenies” mother’s party that she was having. Sammy tells the reader about how much different those parties are then the one that his parents would throw. The difference in the style of the party tells us the Sammy comes from a middle-class family. In the story, a pair of silk stockings Mrs. Sommers unexpectedly acquire $15, which seems like a very large amount of money to her. The money that she has acquired makes her feel like she is wealthy. Therefore, making her feel important. We know that at one point in her life she more money. She spent the entire night thinking of was to sensibly spend the money. The story says “she did not wish to act hastily, to do anything she might afterward regret.” From these few…
