If everything happens for a reason why did everything in A and P happen. Both Sammy and the girls are rebellious against social nurms. Sammy’s perverted views of the girls cause him to quit his job when he knew that the girls would not be waiting for him. Sammy was so infatuated with Queenie that all of his sense of reasoning went out the window. What is it about Queenie that makes Sammy focus on her more than the other girls? Why is the lead girl's name Queenie, why was it so to name to lead girl “Queenie”? As hard as Sammy tries to keep in mind there's three girls in the store he's infatuated with Queenie to the point that his eyes only notices her. When Sammy speaks of Queenie it is as if it is only the two of them in the room and he is looking at her every move but she doesn’t know that he is there. He said “ you could see them, when Queenie’s white shoulders dawned on them, kind of jerk, or hop, or hiccup, but their eyes snapped back to their own baskets and on they pushed. If you read on you would see that Sammy’s infatuation with Queenie was because she was different she was not like all the other people that came into the store and they acted like they were drones. He found solace in knowing that he wasn't the only person there that was not drumming on to the beat so to speak. For the case of Sammy walking out/ quitting because of the girls that part isn't true. Deep down in Sammy’s mind he had to want to to quit and the manager being mean to the girls justified him quitting. They say “love makes you do stupid but isn’t infatuation that makes people do stupid things”. Sammy was infatuated with Queenie to the point that he was willing quit his job to do absolutely nothing because she or the other girls notice him in the store and they still didn’t notice him when he was trying to stand up for them. We know it's a small town because the manager new Sammy's family. But yet it is as if Sammy knew the girls but didn't actually know the girls. Updike went to great lengths to not name anyone in the story but Sammy and Queenie why would that be? Was it because he wanted people to know that some they were the main focus of the story? He left people asking many questions after story ended. Couldn't there have been a better ending to the story than the one he had given. The story have ended with the girls waiting outside for Sammy? Updike was leaving the story for us to interpret. We were the ones that needed to imagine if Sammy would end up with Queenie or not. After all Sammy and Queenie are fictional character and we were the ones bring live to them by reading the story. The open ended story was for everyone to put their ending to
