Innocence and Experience: A&P
The title of the book is Literature: The Human Experience written by Abcarian and Klotz. It is a book that has several chapters that address diverse issues. In this context, the chosen story is one that is in the chapter named as Innocence and Experience while the story is named as A&P where the narrator is a nineteen-year-old boy known as Sammy. The writer of this story is John Uplike whom published A&P in 1961.
Characters
The story is built around three main characters. These include Sammy who also happens to be the narrator, Lingel, and Quennie. Sammy is the main character who is determined to express his feelings for Queenie, one of the girls who have visited his working station in a group of two others. He is not ready to forget about her and he is always hoping that the girl makes a comeback so that he may have another opportunity of seeking her. It is this obsession that starts from the very first page to the end that helps to develop the story. As argued by, a story must have three distinct parents, the begging, rising activities and the denouement (Shanafelt 71). This story also adheres to that framework in that there are three girls that have just walked into a business premises and got the attention of Sammy.
It is from this point that Sammy has become determined in his thoughts to have the three girls. From the very sight, he becomes determined to have them come around to a level where Lingel, another character that helps in the plot development realizes his work colleague’s plans. The end of the story comes at a point when Queen, in the group of the other two girls shoes up and are confronted by Lingel based on their dress code that is portrayed as being inappropriate in such a
