A man of so many words is, was Mr. Serpico. Frank Serpico was an American-Italian, he enlisted into the Army at the age of 18 and did two years in Korea and then became New York police officer after attending college at the age of 23. Serpico was born April 14, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York. So of course he was a man that was really known in New York. Some people would call him a snitch, a rat, while others would call him a true officer, a friend and even a hero. Serpico was a Police Detective that wore plain clothes, while wearing plain clothes his job was to expose vice racketeering. Frank Serpico probably didn’t see what he was doing as nothing spectacular, he probably felt as he was just doing his job like a Police officer is supposed to do. Serpico became famous for basically dropping the ball on police that were corrupted in his department in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.He exposed these police officer for also using bribery within the department also. Serpico was awarded a medal for his bravery in action but they never awarded him for finding out about the corrupted cops. Serpico did what he felt was right and in 1967 he reported, even though actions weren’t taken place right away Mayor Lindsay started to investigate in the 1970’s of April. Lindsay finally took attention to what Serpico reported and had the Knapp commission investigate.
