New York Police Officer

The image of the New York Police Department is that of strength, of discipline, of unity, and of protection. On TV, shows like Rookie Blue, Blue Bloods, and Hawaii Five-0 have police officers who all protect and serve, albeit in an exaggerated way, but if you were to focus on every single officer being shown, they share many characteristics besides being a police officer. Physically, they are well built, many are built from the chest and arms area, muscles are shown. These men are quick and agile, able to run for what seems like miles to capture a criminal. They are also mentally focused, with police officers coordinating among each other, taking accurate shots against criminals firing on them, being able to deal with pain from getting shot …show more content…
studied the effects of about 100 police officers in a large metropolitan police department who have gone through the progressions of becoming police officers to veterans, and whether they have made any changes since then. Boyce notes that as officers have become more experienced, they typically have gone lax in fitness programs. In other words, as police officers begin to have years on their belt, they are exercising less. As these officers were recruits, they were constantly supervised as to their training and dieting habits. Having exercise classes, body fat measurements, and constant follow ups on their overall health shows that newly recruited officers are in better shape than their older counterparts, but again, part of the reason for that is the constant supervision given by supervisory officers while they are young. Part of the reasoning for this phenomenon could be as police officers become veterans in their field, and tenure begins to come into play, officer’s ability to feel motivated to continue to exercise may dwindle.
Body mass index and the prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia
Brown et al. we’re studying how body mass index can show the prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia. They wanted to find out whether younger or older age groups are more likely seen or shown among them. A national survey was taken with a variety of considerations. The considerations were as follows: Education, race, and substance use, such as cigarettes. The results

study was not directly about police officers, but the study can shed some light as to the effects of even light workouts amongst senior members, and the time muscles take among older gentlemen to degrade. Although among senior members of the community did have minor increases in a variety of statistics, such as strength, mobility, and power, all gains were lost after only four months of inactivity. In other words, 6 months of workout for it only to b gone in less than 4 months. Overall, Higher intensity training protocols induce greater gains in strength, anaerobic power, and whole body physical function of older men. Moreover, higher intensity training may maintain the gains for more prolonged periods after training

Police culture, within criminology, is comprised of the overarching occupational philosophy and the individual officer personality type. Throughout the decades, the occupational philosophy of police culture has been molded by ‘core characteristic’ labels such as mission-oriented, suspicious, pessimistic, masculine, isolated and conservative. These labels have created an ‘ideal-type’ of culture that has lasted through time. What has risen through these molding characteristics is an occupational philosophy which includes concepts such as the thin blue line, an ‘us versus them’ mentality and the cop code of silence (Reiner, 1985). Recently there has been a shift outside of criminology, realizing that the idea of police culture has shifted from being “an internalized set of values which motivates people’s decisions and actions” to being a “resourceful tool on which people rely to make sense of situations they navigate in everyday life” (Campeau,…

After reviewing the link to the NYPD’S Mission and Values and last weeks DB post, One can see how police departments do enough in ensuring officers follow their mission and values. It all comes down to whether each officer chooses to actually follow each, as there are situations in life that occur and might influence an officer to navigate against their mission and values. In reference to discretion, Dempsey mentions “One way of controlling discretion, particularly improper application of discretion, is the establishment of employee early warning systems. These automated systems detect significant events in an officer’s statistics, such as a high number of use of force incidents, vehicle pursuits, sick days, involvement in significant events,…

The police department needs to change their tactics. Citizens should no longer go after the officers, but instead go after the higher up in these departments. My overall reaction of how our departments are treating our officers and citizens is in disgust. Maybe our superiors within the NYPD need to be investigated in more depth, instead of our officers whom 95% of the time do not have a say so, they just do what they are told to get paid just like every one else who works. For our officers who, afraid to speak up because of the consequences of being a whistle blower, please stand up for what is right lets out the superiors for all the wrongs being done inside…

The case I have decided to write about is the controversial case regarding the officers who shot and killed Sean Bell. There has recently been a lot of controversy over law enforcement misconduct. In today’s world, almost everything is videotaped, which often causes a lot of conflict because it doesn’t display all the facts. Most times, the video is just a short portion of what really occured. In Sean Bell’s case, it shows that there is still ongoing corruption and police brutality that occurs.…

Police officers who are hired to serve the community, and make it safe, are doing the opposite. Instead of civilians feeling safe, they feel as if they must protect themselves from officers. Many within the society fear for their lives on a day to day basis from officers, whether they are walking, or driving when pulled over. We must watch what we say, or do. They use extreme measures when it is not necessary when handling a situation.…

The police’s job by its very nature is dangerous, and they often find themselves in violent and high-intensity situations that could leave them dead if they don’t act quickly. In life or death situations, human survival instinct takes over, and we can’t expect officers to be an exception to this. No matter what we do, our law enforcement will still be comprised of humans. Humans will panic, humans will make mistakes, and humans will act in their own self-interest when their life is at stake. Countless times officers have put their lives on the line for others, but this is the exception not the rule.…

The student officers knew that we all had to come into the Academy in shape to be ready to PT so it would limit our chance of being modified. Personally, I know that once this student officer had received the call on possible employment with the Bourne Police Department, I stopped my heavy lifting regiment which I had acquired from my days playing collegiate football and focused more on my endurance and cardiovascular strengths. From all my years playing sports I knew that on day one, you did not show up to get in shape, you showed up to keep in shape.…

Not all cops are bad Police Officers: Courageous, strong, brave, amazing people, but to some they are all brutal, evil, horrible people. Not since the 1960s have police been subjected to so much criticism, disaffection, and public abuse (Moore). Yet, not all cops are bad people like people tend to think. A good majority of police are honest, caring, loving people that love their job, protecting us and their city from harm.…

Police officers have three main functions, which are law enforcement, order maintenance, and the service function. Police interact with a lot of different people on a daily basis, ranging from criminals to law abiding citizens. Depending on the person they are interacting will depict the way they would react. Furthermore, if they are dealing with a criminal they would act more in law enforcement mode, if they are dealing with a citizen they may be in the service mode by providing assistance to the person in need. No matter what role they are in, they don’t pursue each assignment equally the same.…

Along with that police prevent crime, maintain order and investigate crimes and apprehend criminals. I emphasize the “serve and protect the community and its citizens” especially citizens because in today’s society we are not protected by the men and women who we thought will protect us the most.
