Jose Rizal wrote the poem a la juventud Filipina in 1879 when he was but a student in the University of Santo Tomas, and as the title suggests, was written for the Filipino youth. The first prize was conferred upon Rizal for this composition, at a competition held by the Liceo Artistico Literario de Manila.

Schumacher said that the reliance on study, on knowledge, as a necessary means by which a true Filipino patriot must love his country and promote her progress expressed an essential and, at the time, predominant tone of Rizal’s nationalism.
