Introduction
Chamonix town is looking to develop their town which is currently suffering due to climate change and other tourist related problems. The main arising problems in the town of Chamonix due to its tourism is traffic, damage to landscape, amenities become tourist-centred so locals are outpriced, noise pollution, skiers who use slopes increase risk of avalanches, seasonal economic booms making business difficult during off-season times, overcrowding beyond carrying capacity of the town, damaged wildlife, demand for second homes leads to out pricing locals and the increased carbon output causing snow line to rise. The town has come up with four solutions to counter …show more content…
This would promote ecotourism which has been successfully completed in Jasper national park located in Canada’s Rocky Mountains. The National Park Consists of over 11 000 square kilometers largely protected from by Canada’s Federal Government. The National Park Act protects and strictly regulates development to protect Canada’s wildlife. In Jasper only 3% of the land has been developed. Amongst the Development are the town of Jasper, and the Marmot Basin ski area. The advantage of this proposal is the environmental development due to the area being protected. The fact that 97% of the area in Jasper park is protected by the National Parks Act allows the wildlife to flourish making it very azzttractive to ecotourists which makes it also help the social development. However, the economic development suffers. This is due to the lack of useable land for development. This causes the problem of having to upgrade and use already existing buildings which makes businesses which need more space suffer. There is no good economic development in Jasper due to the national park area (Parks Canada Writing Team) (Parks Canada Writing Team [2]) (Parks Canada Writing Team …show more content…
Calgary has a population of 1 million people which is one of the largest in Canada. COP was expanded during the Winter Olympics in 1988. This included ski jumps, bob sleigh, skeleton and luge (Ferguson). Then COP built hockey rinks and cross country ski trails. This contributes to the economic development COP as this attracts many different level skiers and snowboarders as well as other people participating in Hockey and bob sled. Another contributor to the economic development of COP is that in the summer they have made mountain bike paths and camps to maximize profit from the facilities so that they are not just used in winter. Also, COP’s social development is good because of the camps as well as COP providing the locals with multiple recreational activities as well as offering jobs to the youth. However, the economic development capitalising on the land leaves little of the natural environment. This is extremely damaging to the environmental development. On top of this the machinery used to create snow and maintain COP such as the snow machines, ice facilities and refrigeration for the bob sleigh track all require energy, which in this case is provided by fossil fuels contributing to the world 's environmental footprint. The environment is not very good because of the lack of Environment and the using of fossil fuels. If Chamonix were to expand like this there would be more effects to the environment but
