In Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days, there are many different cultures which Phileas Fogg and Passepartout explore through-out the entirety of the novel. All of these cultures are set in the late 19th century throughout the world. Some of these cultures include the Indian culture, Chinese culture and Native American culture among the many others that the two are exposed to. All of these cultures will be explored in a comparison of the novel to non-fictional information on the cultures at that time so as to determine the author’s authenticity of the fictional work to actually events and facts of the time period. Though they did stop and rescue a damsel from her most certain death. They only did so because they had been several hours ahead of schedule and the schedule would allow it. Even though this is the case they discover many aspects of the culture whether true or not. One such aspect which seemed unusually interesting was the British influence on the culture of the Indian religion of Hinduism. In the novel Verne consistently references the beautiful and magnificent temples and their amazing architecture. He also makes reference to the fact that, “the wise policy of the British Government severely punishes a disregard of the practices of the native language,” (61). This was certainly the case in Passepartout’s case as he completely disregarded the sacredness of an Indian temple when he entered as a Christian. Not only did he disregard it in this way though, he also entered without removing his shoes which is something that even the faithful Hindu’s must do. He was then chased down and beaten by several Brahman priest who held him down, removed his shoes and chased him away. Later on they get held up in Clacutta and taken to court over the matter and both Mr. Fogg and Passepatout are charged for the deeds that Passepartout had done. Yes, the British government help protect Indian religious laws and rights, and there was also a huge problem with the use of opiates in 19th century China. However, Native Americans were not train robbers and this is a much romanticized notion portrayed for many authors of the era and still even to this day. Jules Verne is however still a critically acclaimed author and had written many great novels in his time which are still loved by people of all ages to this very day. While he kept most of his facts accurate it should not have been expected since he wrote almost exclusively fictional works with great insight into the workings of the industrial revolution.
