Culture And Interpersonal Communication In The Movie Blood In Blood Out

The movie I decided to analyze for this assignment is Blood In Blood Out. This movie is about two Latino brothers, Cruz and Paco, and their cousin, Miclo, who is half white and half Latino, and how their lives are affected by the pact they have to always stick together and fight for each other. Later on in the movie the guys are separated after many conflicts they encountered between each other and with others. Cruz turns to drugs, Paco becomes a detective, and Miclo goes to prison. There are many different forms of communication and relationships between the characters, and there is also a great amount of conflict, which is why I chose this movie. It contains information over body appearance. There are two rival gangs in the same town: Los Vatos Locos and Los Tres Puntos. You can tell a gang member apart from the other by their body appearance. Both gangs mark themselves on their left hands with a placazo (tattoo). Los Vatos Locos mark themselves with a “VL” tattoo, and Los Tres Puntos mark themselves with a “3P”, so everyone already knows which gang they clique with. Los Vatos Locos can also signal each other for whatever reason by using emblems. They form a “V” with one and an “L” with the other hand, which obviously stands for Vatos Locos. Chapter five also describes eye-communication and several important functions of eye contact. The book mentions that one of the functions is to signal status (DeVito, 2016). This type of eye communication occurred in the movie after Miclo was assigned to kill Big Al by the La Onda gang. Big Al worked in the back of the kitchen while Miclo and Geronimo, another Lo Onda gang member, washed the pots and pans in the kitchen.
