1984 In the book, 1984, written by George Orwell, protagonist Winston Smith is a low-ranking government worker for the ruling Party in London. The people are watched all the time, even in their own homes. The Party watches everybody through telescreens, the device used as a surveillance camera and a television. There are posters of the omniscient leader of the Party, Big Brother, everywhere. The Party has reign over everything in Oceania including the nation’s history and even its language. At the time we meet Winston, the Party is enforcing the implementation of an invented language known as Newspeak. This language eliminates all references to rebellion or words related to it. This book was published as a political statement to the world regarding what will happen in 1984 if the national governments continued to migrate towards totalitarian powers. In 1949, the year this book was published, totalitarian powers and dictatorships were becoming more and more prominent in the world. The title of this book suggests, to those in 1949, that the environment described in this book is a real possibility in only thirty-five years. The Totalitarian Empires in the 40’s and 50’s could lead to this horrible state which the ruling Party controls every aspect of human life including thought. This leads to the second theme, Psychological Manipulation. According to Dictionary.com, Psychological Manipulation is a type of social influence that aims to change the perception or behavior of others through underhanded, deceptive, or even abusive tactics. This is used by the Party to barrage its subjects to eliminate all independent and individualistic thought. The constant stream of propaganda is used to be the only source of news and influence on the population. The failures of the Party become huge successes. The only influences on the people are the propaganda-filled telescreens and the large posters everywhere with the face of Big Brother stating that “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU”.
