People did not have cars to make their daily commute. Without cars, how do you think they would get from one place to another? People used covered wagons, horses and buggies; they would walk as well. If they were near water, they could take a boat. They could also ride on a train if people could afford it.
Life was difficult back then. There were no roads, so people would use the trains to get to one place to another. Families had to build their own shelter and it frequently took more than one year as crops were the first consideration so a family could eat and have money to trade for needed supplies. People often only ate meat and a carb; cornmeal, some lard to cook with and perhaps potatoes stored over the winter. This is what they ate several times a day with no let up.
