What do three position signals indicate?

Three position signals indicate speed and what the next signal is doing.

What do three position home signals protect?

Three position home signals display lights by day and night and protect:

S - stations

S - signal boxes

S - sidings

J - junctions

L - level crossings

What may home signals be fitted with in certain conditions?

- low speed signal

- route indicators

- speed indicators

- gauge indicators

- illuminated red letter A

What are uncontrolled home signals used for?

Uncontrolled home signals are used to divide long sections for operational convenience and are operated by passing trains.

They are not equipped with a low speed signal or illuminated red letter A.

What is the stop aspect?

Trains are not permitted to pass a home signal displaying STOP under any circumstances, unless authorised.

What is the normal speed warning aspect?

Train may proceed at maximum track speed past the normal speed warning but be prepared to find the next signal at STOP.

What is the clear normal speed aspect?

Train may proceed at max track speed past the clear normal speed aspect. The next signal could display:

- CLEAR NORMAL SPEED

- NORMAL SPEED WARNING

- REDUCE TO MEDIUM SPEED

What is the reduce to medium speed aspect?

Train may proceed at normal speed past the reduce to medium speed aspect, but must reduce to medium speed (40km/h) before passing the next signal.

* after passing the REDUCE TO MEDIUM SPEED signal, if the driver observes the next signal as an improved aspect the train may regulate accordingly.

What is clear medium speed aspect?

Train may proceed at medium speed (40km/h).

Often medium speed is diverging or changing tracks.

Do not increase from medium speed until out of medium speed track section.

What is medium speed warning aspect?

Train may proceed at medium speed (40km/h) for full track section. Be prepared to stop at next signal, as it may be at STOP.

What is low speed caution aspect?

Low speed movements to be made past a three position home signal have an additional light fixed vertically below the other lights.

Low speed caution displays a yellow light.

- points are set for proceed

- track ahead may be occupied so prepare to stop

- do not exceed 15km/h

What are three position automatic signals?

The two lights exhibited on three position automatic signals are staggered. They sometimes have a small fixed marker light that will only ever be red.

These signals divide track sections into smaller track sections.

They never have a low speed caution light.

What are illuminated 65 or 80 indicators for?

These are for reduce to medium speed OR clear medium speed.

Instead of reducing to 40km/h at the clear medium speed aspect, reduce to 65 or 80 applies - for high speed points.

After having passed the clear medium speed, the maximum speed of 65 or 80 applies to the whole of the track section to the next fixed signal.

If the 65 or 80 speed indicator is not illuminated, the driver travels at the speed of the signal indication - 40km/h.

What does the illuminated red letter A in three position home signal mean?

When the signaller has ‘switched out’ the points are set for the running line and an illuminated red letter A is displayed on the home signal when it displays the STOP aspect.

This signal is then treated as an automatic signal at STOP.

You can pass this ‘switched out A’ signal with permission from a ‘phone call’ and you must only travel at 25km/h being prepared for the track to be occupied.

What does clear and warning mean in three position signals?

CLEAR - travel at track speed, track section is unoccupied and next fixed signal is at proceed.

WARNING - travel at track speed but be prepared to stop at the next fixed signal, next track section is unoccupied and next fixed signal is at stop.

What do three position dwarf signals control?

Three position dwarf signals control:

- running line to running line

- running line to siding

- siding to siding

- siding to running line

STOP - red, blue or purple light

LOW SPEED CAUTION - yellow light

- points are set for movement

- track may be occupied

- proceed, but prepare for obstruction

- maximum speed is 15km/h

CLEAR LOW SPEED - green light (PROCEED)

- points are set for movement

- track is clear to next fixed signal

- next fixed signal is showing proceed aspect

- maximum speed is 15km/h

What is a repeating signal?

Three position repeating signals are used where two position signalling transitions to three position signalling and gives an early indication of the next fixed signal-may be home or automatic.

Repeating signals have 3 aspects - warning, proceed or reduce to medium speed.

What is the class of this signal?

Repeating signal at proceed.

Repeating signal - warning.

WARNING - yellow over yellow - reduce speed, prepare to stop as next fixed signal should be STOP - red over red.

Repeating signal - proceed.

PROCEED - green over yellow - next signal will display a proceed aspect - green over red OR yellow over red OR yellow over green.

Repeating signal - reduce to medium speed

REDUCE TO MEDIUM - yellow over green - speed must be reduced to medium speed of 40km/h (or 65 or 80 if illuminated) at next fixed signal - red over yellow OR red over green.
