Adenohypophysis

-The anterior pituitary gland-Also called the master gland

-is composed of epithelial tissue

-Secretes 6 major hormones

Hormones of the anterior pituitary gland

-thyroid I stimulating hormone (TSH)

-ACTH

-Growth Hormone (GH)

-Gonadotrophins

-Prolactin (PRL)

Growth Hormone (anterior pituitary gland)

-Also called Somatotrophic hormone-Is secreted by the adenohypohysis (anterior pituitary gland) -Stimulates the growth of bone, cartilage, and skeletal muscle.

-Stimulate synthesis of glucose during periods of fasting.

Prolactin (anterior pituitary gland)

-Also called lactogenic hormoneStimulates the breast to develop and produce milk.

Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

Tyroid gland is the target glandStimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones (T3 AND T4)

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)

Target gland is the adrenal cortex Stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete steroids, especially cortisol

Gonadotropic Hormones

Target glands are gonads(sex glands) Follicale-Stimulating hormone (FSH) -Stimulates the development of ova and sperm

-Luteinizing hormone (LH) causes ovulation in women, stimulates secretion of progesterone in women and testosterone in men.

Oxytocin (posterior pituitary gland)

Target organs are uterus and mammary glands (female) Contracts uterine muscles during labor, releases milk from the mammary glands (during breast feeding)

Trade name=Pitocin (to initiate labor)

Posterior pituitary gland

Also called the neutohypophysis -is composed of nervous tissue

The two hormones that are produce in the hypothalamus and transported to the gland where they are stored until needed.

Contains the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and Oxytocin

Controlled by the neuroendocrine reflexes (hormones are released in response to signals from the nervous system.

The Thyroid Gland

-Largest of the endocrine glands

-Situated on the front sides of the trachea

-butterfly-shaped, has two lobes connected by a tissue band called the isthmus

-contains two types of cells the follicular cells-located within the thyroid follicle. Secrete T3 and T4

-Parafollicular cells- located between the follicles.

Each follicule of filled with clear , visous substance called colloid.

T3 and T4

T3=triiodothyronine

T4=tetraiodothyronine or thyroxine
