Family Government
-The head of the family (man or woman) was responsible for enforcing the laws of the colony (no police), keeping family members free of sin, and prayed daily.
-In New England no one could live alone unless they had servants or children.
-Widowed woman with no children would be required to re-marry quickly.
-Widowed woman with children could be heads of the household and did not have to re-marry quickly.
Nuclear Family
-Parents & young children living together in a house without grandparents in the same house.
-Mom, Dad & Kids only under one roof.
Extended Family
-A house where grandparents live also, always close to their married children.
-Mom, Dad, Kids, and the Kid's Grandparents under one roof.
Modified Extended Family
-A family unit where the grandparents are close and involved in the lives of their married children, however they live in a different house close to them.
-Most common family construct during the Colonial period until about the 1800's.
Demography
-The population distribution and numbers.

-When one spouse leaves the other and absolutely refuses- this is punishable by death during this period.
deference (9/16)
-(REPEAT WORD): During the colonial period parents though that kids should display a certain level of respect, work ethic, and obedience.
-Parents wanted to break the will of a child and instill a certain level of deference.
-This is how everyone is society was taught respect, when the children grew up they would know how to treat those higher then themselves on the social ladder.
Placing Out (9/16)
-In colonial times children would be sent away to live with another family (a stranger or a family member) where they would learn, this was considered to be their schooling in place of formal schooling.
-Usually an informal agreement between the two families however, sometimes could turn into a formal "apprenticeship".
-Usually from ages 6-21
Social Mobility (9/16)
-Moving Up or Down on the social ladder.
-In mid-1600's Harvard nor Boston Grammer School was used as a vehicle for social mobility.
-Just because you went to school does not make give you a higher standing in society- at Harvard rosters ordered from most affluent to the least not alphabetically.
