How are phagocytes recruited to an infected area?

Phagocytes go through 2 phases of migration to reach the infected area.


1. Margination- phagocyte sticks to endothelium (lining) of blood vessel.


2. Diapedesis- phagocyte squeezes between endothelial cells to reach infected area.

What are the signs and symptoms of inflammation?

- redness (vasodilation)


- swelling (vasodilation, blood vessel fluid leakage, increase in cell number)


- heat (vasodilation, increase in cell activity)


- pain (damage, pressure, increase nerve sensitivity)

What is the complement system?

The compliment system is a protein based antimicrobial defense system. Involves over 30 different proteins and acts in a cascade (one reaction triggers another, amplifying the effects)
