Route:
RAPID IV push at the insertion site (anticubital space)

Dose:
12 mg rapid IV push followed immediately by a rapid 20 mL NS flush

Repeat doses (if indicated) are 12 mg push followed immediately by a rapid 20 mL NS flush.

Pediatric: Unusual - contact biotel.

Drug Action
Slows conduction through the AV node.
Can interrupt re-entry pathways.
Causes a transient AV block.
Vasodilation.

Indications:
PSVT

Precautions
Assure rhythm is not ventricular in origin.
Explain expected side effects to patient.
Monitor patient and ECG continuously.

Use with caution for COPD, CHF and CAD pts.
Notify BioTel prior to administration if the following are present:
Asthma Pt. taking bronchodilators (theophyllline preparations).
Seizure pt. taking carbamazepine.
Recent caffeine ingestion.

Side Effects:
Light-headedness, flushing, sweating, chest pain, transient asystole nausea/vomiting.

Contraindications:
2nd or 3rd degree heart block
Atrial fib or flutter
Sick sinus syndrome
Dipyridamole
Organophosphate ingestion
Adenosine / Adenacard

Additional information
-IV has to be large and in the AC for Rapid IV push.
-Half life of 10 seconds.
-Can cause short period of asystole.
-blocks impulses at the AV node.
