What is the chemical equation for cellular respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6(O2) ---> 6(CO2) + 6(H2O) + energy
What gets put in and produced in glycolysis?

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
1. 2 ATP put in
2. 2 PGAL produced... then convert
3. 2 NADH produced
4. 4 ATP produced
5. 2 pyruvate formed
What gets put in and produced in the aerobic pathway starting from pyruvate through the Krebs cycle?

(multiply the following by 2 to get total)
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Multiply the following by 2 to get the total

1. Pyruvate put in
2. 1 CO2 + 1 NADH + 1 acetyl CoA produced
3. Acetyl CoA ---> citrate
4. Get 3 NADH
5. Get 1 FADH2
6. Get 1 ATP
7. Get 2 CO2
8. Get OAA
How much FADH2, NADH, and ATP is produced in each of these processes (do the total... i.e. 2 turns of the Krebs cycle)

Glycolysis
Pyruvate to acetyl CoA
Krebs cycle
Glycolysis: 2 ATP, 2 NADH---(4ATP)
pyruvate to acetyl CoA: 2 NADH---(6 ATP)
Krebs cycle: 2 ATP, 6 NADH---(18 ATP), 2 FADH2---(4 ATP)

Total: 36 ATP
Where does oxidative phosphorylation take place?
Inner membrane of the mitochondria
Where does glycolysis occur?
Cytosol
Where does the Krebs cycle and the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl CoA occur?
Mitochondrial matrix
What's the difference between oxidative phosphorylation and substrate level phosphorylation?
Substrate level phosphorylation: A phosphate group is added to ADP to form ATP. The energy is transferred from the substrate molecule.

Oxidative phosphorylation: the phosphate group is added to ADP to form ATP, but the energy comes from the electron transport chain. A H+ gradient is made, which powers ATP synthetase
What would happen if there wasn't any oxygen at the end of the electron transport chain?
NADH would accumulate. Once all of the NAD was used up, ATP would stop being made and the cell would die. Glycolysis and the Krebs cycle need NAD to run
Where does anaerobic respiration occur?
In the cytosol
What kind of organisms use alcohol fermentation?
Fungi (yeast), plants, and bacteria
What are the steps of alcohol fermentation?
1) Pyruvate ---> 1 CO2 + 1 acetylaldehyde
2) Acetylaldehyde + NADH ----> Ethanol + NAD
What organisms does lactic acid fermentation occur in?
Humans and animals
What are the steps of lactic acid fermentation?
Pyruvate + NADH ----> lactic acd + NAD
What is chemiosmosis?
It's when you make ATP by using a proton concentration gradient
