Perceptual schema

Whats developed in order to organize impressions of others. Impressions are based on appearance, social roles and interaction styles. How we classify others.

Self serving bias

When we judge ourselves its lenient. When others suffer its their personal qualities when we suffer its outside forces.


Ex. When they botch a job- werent listening


When we botch a job- the directions werent clear

Empathy

The ability to recreate another person's perspective to experience the world from their POV. Involves perspective taking, concern and emotions( help us understand others feelings).

Sympathy

You view the others situation from your POV. when you sympathize its the other persons joy, pain etc. When you empathize it becomes yours.

Ethnocentrism

The attitude that one's own culture is superior to others. Anyone that doesnt belong to your in group is strange and maybe even inferior.

Stereotypes

Exaggerated generalizations associated w/ a categorizing system. When generalizations lose track w/ reality its a stereotype.

Whats the process of stereotyping?

1. You categorize people on the basis of an easily recognized characteristic.


2. Ascribe a set of characteristics to most or all members of the group.


3. Appy the set of characteristics to any member of the group.
