In today’s world, when both the parents have work related commitments, children spend a considerable time of their childhood in different social contexts. As the early years of childhood are very important for social, emotional, cognitive, physical and language development, children’s social surroundings put a great impact on developing their views and attitudes. Stereotypes are the set thoughts about specific people or certain ways of doing things. According to Fiske (2010), stereotyping is the application of an individual’s own thoughts, beliefs, and expectations onto other individuals without first obtaining factual knowledge.(as cited in Keene, 2011). This type of stereotype creates social injustice as people have formed views about other people without any solid proof. Stereotypes are closely attached to differences and diversities. For example, childcare profession is generally considered to be related to females. When I preferred my nephew to join early childhood education course, he replied, “That’s not a profession for males”. Thus, it is clear that people look at the things through the lenses of stereotypes. These stereotypes give birth to “bias, which is basically a belief that stereotype is true” (AAUW, 2014). Bias can be a prejudice where one person, thing or group in favoured on another in an unfair way. Fiske (2010) found many forms of bias including race, age, gender, and ethnicity and can be universal or location specific (as cited in Keene, 2011). For example, there can be a bias based on sex when there is an advertisement of manager position, where only men can apply in the newspaper or internet.
