There are a couple different types of prejudice, these include: prejudice as a negative affect, prejudice as an attitude and prejudice as a social emotion. (The Psychology of Prejudice, p. 8-10)

The stereotypes we hold against certain groups become our attitudes towards those groups as well. These attitudes transform into prejudices against the group. Prior to more recent research, there was criticism from researchers who believed there was no connection between stereotypes and prejudice because of a study in which concluded that people do not have steady attitude that guides their behavior a certain way. However, the balance theory has one major flaw is that not every person who has racist attitudes against a certain group will act that way towards that group. In fact, they actually have discriminatory thoughts towards a group, but never display them publicly and maintain normal behavior when they are around the group they may not exhibit prejudices towards them. There is an emphasis on African American and White relations because it has played such an enormous role in defining prejudice and discrimination. The majority of the research that has been conducted on prejudice and stereotyping has been done using the relations between the two groups. The complicated relation between the two groups has served a great wealth of information for researchers, and most of the United States’ major events such as the civil war, segregation affirmative action and similar types of reform have been brought about due to conflicts between the two groups.
