Alveolar ventilation
the amount of inspired air that reaches the alveoli of the lungs (p. 175)
Alveoli
small air sacs in the lungs that fill with air on ispiration and are the point of gas exchange with the pulmonary capillaries (p. 156)
Bilaterally
on both sides (p. 178)
Bradypnea
a breathing rate that is slower than the normal rate (p. 180)

Cyanosis

Gurgling
a gargling sound that indicates a fluid is in the mouth or pharanyx (p. 164)

Hemoglobin
a complex protein molecule found on the surface of the red blood cell that is responsible for carrying a majority of oxygen in the blood (p.160)
Hypoperfusion
the insufficient supply of oxygen and other nutrients to some of the body's cells that results from inadequate circulation of blood (shock)
(p. 159) |
Hypopnea
inadequate tidal volume in a breathing patient (p. 197)
Snoring
a sound that is heard when the base of the tongue or relaxed tissues in the pharynx partially block the upper airway (p. 163)
Stridor
a harsh, high-pitched sound heard on inspiration that indicates swelling of the larynx (p.164)
Tachypnea
a breathing rate that is faster than the normal rate (p. 180)
Adequate breathing in adult
10-24 respirations per minute
Adequate breathing in child
15-30 respirations per minute
Adequate breathing in infant
25-50 respirations per minute
Two parts to adequate breathing
adequate respiratory rate and adequate tidal volume with each breath
Ventilation rate for children/infants with pulse
12-20 times per minute (once every 3-5 seconds)
Ventilation rate for adults with a pulse
10-12 times per minute (once every 5-6 seconds)
Ventilation for adults and children with no pulse
30 compressions, 2 ventilations
Ventilation rate for newborns with pulse
40-60 ventilations per minute
Ventilation for newborn with no pulse
3:1 90 compressions to 30 ventilations
11 Signs of inadequate breathing
Fast or slow respiratory rate
unequal chest expansion retractions cool/clammy skin gasping (seen before death) irregular breathing rhythm increased breathing effort shallow breathing cyanosis nasal flaring use of accesory muscles |
