Ambassador

An accredited diplomat sent by a country as an official representative to a foreign country

Balance of power

A condition of roughly equal strength between opposing countries or alliances of countries

Buffer state

A small neutral country situated between two large hostile countries and serving to prevent the outbreak of a regional conflict

Consulate

The place of work for an official appointed by the government of one country to look after its commercial interests and the welfare of its citizens in another country

Devolution

The transfer or delegation of power to a lower level, especially by central government to local or regional administration

Domino theory

The theory that a political event in one country will cause similar events in neighboring countries, like a falling domino

EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone)

A sea zone prescribed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea over which a state has special rights regarding the exploration and use of marine resources

Hartland is the central part of a region defined by geographical or nongeoraphical criteria while Rimland is a land or region at the periphery of a heartland

Iron Curtain

The name for the physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of WWII until the end of the cold war

Irredentism

Any political or popular movement intended to reclaim and reoccupy a lost homeland. Irredentiam tries to justify its territorial claims on the basis of (real or imagined) historic or ethnic affiliations

Law of the Sea

Part of an international law pertaining to the rights over the high seas. Proclaimed by the United Nations Convention and covering a wide range of matters including territorial zones, access to transit on the sea, preservation of environment, and resolution of international disputes

Median-line principle

An approach to dividing and creating boundaries at the mid-point between two places e.g. the great lakes between Canada and the US

NAFTA

North American Free Trade Agreement. An agreement signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America.

NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Is an intergovernmental military alliance between 29 North American and European countries. Constitutes a system of collective defense whereby its independent member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party.

OPEC

The Organization of the Petroleum Exoporting Countries is an intergovernmental organization of 15 nations. The 15 countries account for an estimated 44 percent of global oil production and 81.5 percent of the worlds "proven" oil reserves, giving OPEC a major influence on global oil prices.

The principle of dividing a city, state, ect. Into separate administrative regions

Satellite state

Designates a country that is formally independent on the world, but under heavy political, economic, and military influence or control from another country

Shatterbelt

Generally refers to a geographic region that is plagued by both local conflicts within or between states in the region, and by the involvement of competing major powers outside the region

Supranationalism

Having power or influence that transcends national boundaries or governments

Terrorism

The systematic use of violence by a group in order to intimidate a population or coerce a government into granting its demands

Treaty ports

A port bound by treaty to be open to foreign trade, especially in 19th and early 20th century China and Japan

UNCLOS (United Nations Convension on the Law of the Sea)

The international agreement that resulted from the third United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea
