    AD654-5 and Stonegrave was probably one of these. The Minster was rebuilt and added to during the Norman period, and a major refurbishment took place in 1862-3. In the north aisle, a tomb recess with a canopy holds the effigies of Robert Thornton 1418 and his wife. The oak chancel screen bears the date 1637 and the pulpit is of a similar age. But, one of the most prized artefacts is a tenth-century Anglo-Saxon wheel-head cross, which stands about six feet in height. From Stonegrave we ascend the limestone ridge of Caukleys Bank. Although the highest point, at the OS column, is only 321 feet (98m), the views are extensive: to the north, Ryedale and the hills of the North York Moors; to the east, the Vale of Pickering and the Wolds; and panning right, the Howardian Hills merge into the Vale of York. In the seventeenth century horse races took place along this ridge. The route continues down Caukleys Lane to the road near West Ness. After passing the old Wesleyan chapel of 1836 we follow a riverside path to Mill Farm. The four-storey building to the right is the former Nunnington Mill, enlarged and partly rebuilt in 1875, powered by an internal undershot wheel. Between 1920 and 1950 the mill also generated electricity for Nunnington Hall. Notice the ha-ha on the right as we approach the road. A ha-ha consists of a deep sloping ditch with a walled embankment on their inner side, forming an effective boundary without spoiling the view, their purpose was to prevent grazing animals…
