Wound is left open and allowed to heal by contraction and epithelialization

Occurs at a slower rate due to tissue loss

More susceptible to infection

Tertiary Intention

Known as delayed primary closure

Wound intentionally left open - usually closed after a few days once swelling, infection, or bleeding decreased
