Types of Wound Healing |
1. Primary intention 2. Secondary intention 3. Tertiary intention |
|
Primary Intention |
Union of the edges of a wound Closed with sutures, skin adhesives, staples or clips |
|
Secondary Intention |
Occurs when wound's edges cannot be brought together Wound is left open and allowed to heal by contraction and epithelialization Occurs at a slower rate due to tissue loss More susceptible to infection |
|
Tertiary Intention |
Known as delayed primary closure Wound intentionally left open - usually closed after a few days once swelling, infection, or bleeding decreased |
|
Phases of Wound Healing |
1. Haemostasis 2. Inflammatory phase 3. Proliferation 4. Maturation or remodelling phase |
