What was wrong with the land after the Civil War
Land had been destroyed in fighting, buildings burned and no money to rebuild. No money to pay people to work the land since all slaves were now free.
Why were the freed slaves a problem?
They had no homes, no food, no clothing and no way to make a living
What was done to help VA overcome the problems of the freed slaves?
Congress created the Freedman's Bureau and sharecropping was started.
What is sharecropping?
Farmers needed workers. Poor white farmers and freed slaves needed jobs. Those in need to used land to farm and pay rent for that land with crops at the end of the growing season. They gave a share of their crops.
What was wrong with sharecropping?
The land owners often made the sharecroppers pay more than half of their crops, so they were just as poor as before.
What was life like during the Reconstruction?
Blacks and whites both held offices in the government, ate at the same restaurantes, rode the same railcars, voted in the elections.
Why did the equality during the Reconstruction end?
Some white wanted things to return to the old ways.
What is discrimination?
The unfair difference in the treatment of people.
How were African Americans discriminated agains?
Laws were passed to keep them from voting and to keep them separated from whites.
