Democracy

Government where people have a say in the rules and consequences of governing.

Direct Democracy

A type of government where every citizen votes on each decision or issue. (Ancient Athens-Everyone voted on each decision)

Representative Democracy

A type of government where citizens vote for a person who makes decisions for them. Ex: The United States (Congress and President make rules)

Absolute Monarchy

A government ran by a king or queen. The monarch (king or queen) make all of the decisions. Power is passed down through family relationships. Ex: The Lion King or United Arab Emirates

King or a Queen

Constitutional Monarchy

A government with a king or queen BUT they have a Parliament or other group that makes the government decisions. The role of the king or queen is to serve as a symbol for the country and to conduct business with other countries.

Theocracy

A government where religious leaders of the community are in charge of the government. Ex: Vatican City

Oligarchy

A government ran by a small group of people with equal power (usually a small group like 5-7 people) Ex: India (Sort of)Understanding the concept is more important than knowing specific examples. Many modern governments have aspects of being an Oligarchy but none are complete true oligarchies.

Communism

A government structure where all economic production and distribution is equally divided among the entire society. Everyone works equally, everyone receives equal amounts, and everyone is equally in charge. Many governments claim to have socialist or communist beliefs dictating their behavior but in reality most of them use ideas of socialism, yet are a combination of socialism and oligarchy. Ex: China

Dictatorship

A government where one person makes all the rules and decisions without input from anyone else. A single person has all of the power.


Ex: North Korea

Election

The event where people select the person who will make government decisions for them in a democracy

Authoritarian Government

Any government where a single person is in charge of all of the decisions. Dictatorships and absolute monarchies are considered authoritarian governments. Ex: North Korea, United Arab Emirates

Parliament

A group of elected people who are in charge of making government decisions like how to spend money and what laws should be passed. Often a Parliament is the other half of a Constitutional Monarchy along with the monarch. Ex: England

Veto

The ability of a government group or person to stop a government decision. Ex: If the President decides a law that Congress passes is a bad idea.

Rule of Law

The idea that every person, even the president, policemen, and judges have to follow the law.

Limited Government

The idea that governments should have limits on their power or their ability to make decisions. Ex: United States President has the right to veto laws that Congress creates. The president in this case is limiting Congress.
