Cysteine-tellurite

Differential for C. Diptheriae

Produces black colonies

Loeffler

Enrichment for C. Diptheriae

Promotes development of metachromatic granules.

Tindale

Selective differential for C. Diptheriae

Corynebacterium produce gray to black due to reduction of tellurite.

C. Diptheriae are surrounded by brown halo.

Bismuth sulfite

Salmonella

S. Thyphi are black, surrounded by metallic sheen. Others light green.

Cefsulodin-irgasan-novoviocin (CIN)

Selective for Yersinia enterolitica, Aeromonas, Plesiomonas shigelloides.

Crystal violet inhibits GN. Novobiocin inhibits GPC. Cefsulodin inhibits most GP and GN. Yersinia appears as red "bull-eye"

Alkaline peptone water (APW)

Enrichment for recovery of Vibrio from stool. Alkaline pH suppresses commensals. Subculutured to TCBS.

Thiosulfate citrate bile salts sucrose agar (TCBS)

Selective for vibrio. High pH inhibits most bacteria. V. Cholera ferments sucrose produces yellow colonies. V. Parahaemolyticus and V. Vulnificus don't ferment and produce blue green.

Bordet-Gengou

Selective enrichment for Bordatella pertussis.

Potato-glycerol-based medium enriched with blood. Contsminsnts inhibited by methicillin. "Cough plate." Bordatella resemble mercury droplets.

Buffered Charcoal-yeast extract agar (BCYE)

Enrichment for Legionella.

Yeast extract and L-cysteine enhance growth. Charcoal absorbs toxic compounds.

Regan-Lowe

Selective for B. Pertussis

Charcoal supplemented with horse blood, cephalexin, and amphotericin B.

Human blood bilayer Tween (HBT)

Selective and differential for G. Vaginalis.

Incubate in increase CO2 for 48 hr. Colonies are beta hemolytic.

Modified Thayer-Martin

Selective for N. Gonorrhea and N. Meningitidis

Vancomycin, colisitin, nystatin, and trimethoprim inhibit growth of other bacteria. Incubate in increase CO2.

Martin-lewis

Selective for N. Gonorrhea and N. Meningitidis

Similar to Thayer-Martin but different antibiotics. Inhibits yeast better. Incubate in increase CO2.

New York City medium (NYC)

Selective for N. Gonorrhea and N. Meningitidis

Incubate in increase CO2. Some N. Gonorrhea will be inhibited by antibiotics. Genital mycoplasmas will grow.

GC-LECT

Selective for N. Gonorrhea and N. Meningitidis

Antibiotics to inhibit GN and GP bacteria and yeast.

JEMBEC

For transportation and growth of Thayer N. Gonorrhea. Plates contain Neisserria selective medium and come with resealable polyethylene bag and CO2 generating tablet. No need to transfer to culture plate.

Deoxychocolate-citrate

Selective for Salmonella and Shigella.

Other enterics inhibited.

Hektoen enteric (HE)

Selective and differential for Salmonella and shigella

Bile salts, bromothymol blue, acid fuchsin inhibit normal GI flora. Nonpathogens=orange to pink. Non-lactose fermenters=green to blue-green. H2S=black center

Xylose lysine deoxychocolate (XLD)

Selective and differential for Salmonella and shigella.

Deoxychocolate inhibits many GNR and GP.

Yellow=E. Coli

Yellow with black center=some Proteus

Colorless/red=shigella

Red with black centers=salmonella

Salmonella-Shigella (SS)

Selective for salmonella and shigella.

Brilliant green and bile salts inhibit enterics. Colorless colonies. Salmonella had black center.

Gram-negative broth

Enrichment and selective for salmonella and shigella from stool and rectal swabs.

Deoxychocolate and citrate salts inhibit growth of GP. Subculture onto selective media after 6-8 hour & 18-24 hour incubation.

SSA

Selective for Group A strep. Group B will also grow.

Antibiotics suppress normal throat flora.

Eosin methylene blue (EMB)

Selective and differential for enteric GNR.

Eosin and methylene blue inhibit GP.

Lactose fermenters=green/black/purple

Non lactose=colorless

E. Coli=green metallic sheen

Cycloserine-cefoxitin-fructose agar (CCFA)

Used for recovery of C. Difficile. Inhibit growth of gram negative coliform.

C. Diff ferments fructose, forming acid that causes colonies to become yellow.

Cetrimide

Isolation of pseudomonas aeruginosa

Also called pseudocel

Contains pigment pyocyanin
