Causes of the revolution

Development
- Due to the financial crisis, Louis XVI was forces to raise taxes so he called for a reunion of the states general

-The states general was formed:

1: 1 state, 300 delegates
2: 2 state, 300 delegates
3: 3 state, 600 delegates

-The third state wanted to abolish the tax exemption of the nobility and the clergy

-Each state had 1 vote, but the third state wanted to have a vote per person

- The king voted in favor of the first and the second state

- the third got together to make a draft of a new constitution

- They got together as a national assembly

- Louis XVI, prepared the force against the 3rd state; commoners defended themselves by taking "la Bastille"

-On July 14, 1789, the French Revolution started

- A popular revolution started in France

- People feared they foreign countries would invade France, so they supported the king again
Destruction of the old engine
- At Versailles in August 4, 1789, the National Assembly abolished the privileges of the nobles and the clergy, as well as the rights of landlords

- They made the "declaration of rights of men and citizens".
Men's rights included were:
*liberty
*security
*property
*resistance to prison
These rights were not for women

- Louis XVI was forced to accept these "dangers" by a group of women

- He was also forced to go back to Paris to show his support to the National Assembly
Church Reforms
-The lands of the church were sold
-The French governments controlled everything concerning the church
The New constitution and new fears
-The National Assembly made a new constitution(1791). They set up a legislative assembly to control the monarch

-Louis XVI, didn't cooperate even tried to fill the country yet, he was captured and sent back
War with Austria
-Austria and Prussia feared these people would make a constitution to control them too, so they threatened to restore Louis XVI to France
-The legislative assembly declared war to Austria
Rise of the Paris Commue
- In August, a mob attacked the royal palace and National Assembly

-The Paris commue took the king captive and forced the National Assembly to suspend the monarch

-They called the national convention chosen on the basin of male suffrage
