Because it was the first meeting of its kind on the North American continent, it was later called the First Continental Congress.
What did the First Continental Congress do when it met?
Congress sent a signed request to the king. This petition reminded the king of the colonists´ basic rights as British citizens. It said that the colonists had the right to life and liberty. It also said that they had the right to assemble, or gather together, and the right to a trial by jury.
