What are the requirements to make a takeout double? |
Short in opponents suit Other suits 3 cards at least 13 + points counting dummy points OR Any hand with 18+ points (jumbo x) |
What are some other ways to use the TO X? |
Jumbo TO X 17+ points. Force pard to bid, then name suit. 19+ points Balanced hand. X then 2 NT |
The opener's pard is the responder. What is the doubler's pard? |
Advancer |
When can the advancer pass? |
When her RHO has bid When you have length and strength in O's bid suit, convert to penalty double. |
After a TO x, 0-8 points |
Bid longest suit cheaply as possible, Majors preferred. Higher ranking of two suits of same length. |
When can you advance to 1 NT? |
7-9 HCP's and you promise GOOD STOPPERS in opponent's suit. |
After a TO x, 9-11 points |
Bid your longest suit by jumping one level. If you have two suits with same length, bid the higher ranked one. A jump response is not forcing. If opponent’s suit is well stopped without a 4-card major suit you can bid 2NT.. |
When can you bid 2 NT over a TO x? |
10-12 HCP's and opponent’s suit well stopped, no 4-card major suit you can bid 2NT.. |
After a takeout double, 12+ points |
Bid a game in your longest suit. Bid opponent's suit. Cuebidding is forcing. Use it when you have 13+ points. If opponent’s suit is strong (if you have stoppers) without a 4-card major suit you can bid 3NT.. |
What does this indicate? 1 ♥ x xx? |
A redouble after RHO doubles indicates 10+ points and NO support for pard's suit <= 2 cards in pard's suit. (Takeout doubler didn't like your pard's suit, and neither do you! ) |
What three things tell you pard's double is Takeout and not penalty?
1. Neither you nor pard have bid 2. 1st or 2nd bid by doubler 3. Opponents have bid 1 or 2 suits (NOT NT) |
1H - x - ? You hold ♠ K Q J 8 3 ♥ 10 5 ♣ A K 4 ♦ 7 4 3 your bid? |
REDOUBLE! Tells pard you have invitational strength at least (10+ points), and <3 cards in support of Spades. |
What is doubler promising here? 1♦ - x - P - 2♥ P - 2♠ |
This is a "jumbo double" With 18 + points, double, and then bid your suit. With LESS than 18 points, pass after pard has bid. |
What is going on here? 1 ♠- x - P - 2♠ |
Cue bid. With 12+ points, bid opponent's suit. _ FORCING on doubler. |
1♠ - x - P - 1 NT means? |
6-10 points, and strength in Spades. |
1♠ - x - P - 2 NT means? |
11- 12 points, and strength in Spades. |
1♠ - x - P - 3 NT means? |
13+ points, and strength in Spades. |
1♠ - x - P - 2♠ P - ? |
Doubler MUST bid. Cuebids are forcing to game
1 ♦ - x - 1 NT How is this different from 1 ♦ - P - 1 NT |
With a hand that's not good to bid NT, responder can pass, knowing that he will get another bid. ♠ x ♥ K Q x ♦ J 10 x ♣ x x x x x x Without a x, responder must bid 1 NT with the hand. |
1 ♦ - x - 1 NT What question did responder ask to bid 1NT here? |
Do I want to play this hand in NT? If not, you can pass. You'll get another turn to bid. |
1♣ - x - ? ♠ Q J x ♥ x x x x ♦ J 10 x ♣ K x x |
Normally, you would need to bid 1 ♥ here, even with this awful suit. With a double in between, you can pass. After a takeout double, don't bid a new suit unless you don't mind being raised in that suit by pard. |
If your pard opens, RHO passes, and you have 6+ points, you must bid. Is that different after a takeout double?
YES! Passing over a takeout double does not deny 6 points. Use your judgement- do you want to play in NT with that hand? |
1 ♠ - x - xx says? |
I have 10+ points, we should go to game, or consider doubling opponents contract. |
