Some ethnic groups are less well represented in terms of sport participation- due to lack of facilities, knowledge of UK sport and poverty.


County sport partnerships have pledged to make minority sport high on their agenda and have signed a racial equality charter for sport which promotes sporting equals.


More access opportunities given by sporting equals campaign resulted in investment in to black and minority ethnic communities.

Priority for government via department for education


Main initiatives to develop primary sport is via PE and Sports Premium . Financial support is given to improve quality of sport and PE on offer.


School games initiative is designed to improve competitive sporting opportunities for both disabled and non-disabled athletes.

Participation is affected by:


Influence of Technology on everyday life


Sport not as prominent and effectively promoted as it could be


Shift towards health and fitness activities for looking and feeling good which is now happening at an earlier age


In order to overcome challenges, sports development must:


Identify sport activities which will capture interest of young people


Be made more visible


Be linked to other interests that children have


Create experiences which will make young people want to participate


Be wider and more diverse in its offering

Motivated to play sport for enjoyment socialising weight loss and to keep fit

Barriers to motivation include: health issues, injury, disabilities, lack of opportunity and cost

Vital for these people to participate to improve health and decrease stress levels

How to further encourage participation

Physically inactive may be encouraged to participate by introducing measures such as:


Range of activities


Involving young people in recruitment (project managers)


For older people, including a social aspect as a central part of activity


Provide childcare facilities


Black and minority—> family orientated activities


Disabled people—> range of opportunities to increase motivation


Disadvantaged communities —> help by a project coordinator who can help build trust in the community
