Repeated contact with this surgical scrub may rarely lead to the development of thyroid dysfunction

Povidone-iodine

This procedure destroys all organisms and spores on an object.
Sterilization

This chemical disinfectant is commonly used to preserve tissues for histopathologic assessment.

Formaldehyde

These are often placed in the intramedullary canal of long bones to repair fractures.
Steinmann pins
These thumb forceps have a broad curved surface that is good for needle handling but traumatic for tissues.
Russian thumb forceps
These tissue forceps are considered to be traumatic and should only be used on tissue to be removed.
Allis tissue forceps
Instruments "sterilized" with this method should only be used for minor procedures, and they must be cleaned for at least 3 hours.
Cold sterilization
If this happens to a gown or drape, it is no longer sterile.
Strike-through
This equipment sterilizes instruments by producing steam under pressure.

Autoclave

Before the large surgical drape is placed over the patient, these are placed around the area to be incised.

Quarter drapes

If left on the arthroscope, residues of this chemical sterilization agent can cause chemical synovitis.
Glutaraldehyde
In this type of electrosurgery, no ground plate is needed.
Bipolar
These are often used to obtain cancellous bone grafts.
Curette
This method of gloving decreases the chance of contamination.
Closed gloving
These forceps are commonly used to crush the ovarian pedicle and body of the uterus during spays and have both longitudinal and cross grooves at the tip.
Rochester-Carmalt forceps
This method of sterilization has replaced ethylene oxide sterilization because it is safer for the environment and personnel.
Hydrogen peroxide gas plasma
Special glasses must be worn by everyone in the room when this method is used to cut tissue.
Biomedical lasers
These scissors are used to cut more delicate tissue such as fat or thin muscle.
Metzenbaum scissors
The contact time for this surgical scrub solution is not as critical as with povidone-iodine.
Chlorhexidine
These are named by the number of screw holes in them and the screw diameter that best fits.
Bone plate
