INVENTORY - any materials or supplies in excess of appropriate quantity or time

purchasing excess inventory; long cycle times for certain parts or suppliers; "pack rat" mentality; risk of obsolescence; too much coffee, paper, etc.

MOTION - excessive movement involved in a given task; movement of people that don't add value to product or service

nurses excessively walking around looking for supplies or tools; opening multiple software apps; clicking to get information; how far paperwork travels; inefficient workplace organization

8 WASTES: DOWNTIM(E)

EXTRA PROCESSING - any effort that adds zero value to product or service from customer's perspective

extra fields requiring unused info; multiple signatures; unnecessary completion of templates, forms or docs; re-work loops or workarounds

GREEN BELT

Supports Lean 6S from within OTHER admin or tech full-time role in company such as dept or functional mgr, process owner; does not work full-time LSS; 20% of time to improvement projects

BLACK BELT

Full-time, lead and support Green, Yellow, White. Mentors Green. Coach, mentor, project leader and content expert

MASTER BLACK

Full-time; manages, mentors, coaches, leads BLACKs to support GREENs, select projects, remove barriers, identify org gaps, select and launch improvement projects
