In-home Services
In-home services are provided to help a household or family members live together harmoniously in a secure and safe environment. The main categories of in-home services include family counselling services, parenting supports, child protection, in-home child care, homemaker services, and family educational services.
Out-of-home Services
Out-of-home services are implemented when the home situation becomes unsuitable for the upbringing of a child, such as foster care, adoption, daycare centres, community supports, group homes, institutional care, parenting self-help and empowerment groups, and family housing assistance.
Differential Response (DR)
An approach to child protection that enables a new flexible intake and assessment model that assesses eligibility for services, safety, and risk, while allowing for greater engagement with families.
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
A streamlining approach to the court process that seeks alternatives to court.
Kinship Service
An approach to child protection that aims to keep children with immediate and extended family members; kinship service refers to placement of children who are not in the care of child services with other family members.
Kinship Care
An approach to child protection that aims to keep children with immediate and extended family members; kinship care refers to placement of children who are in the care of child services agencies with other family members. Kinship care families go through the same process of assessment and preparation as non-kinship families.
Best Interests Approach
An approach to child protection that emphasizes the protection and well-being of the child, no matter what the situation. This approach is in contrast to the least restrictive approach.
Least Restrictive Approach
An approach to child protection that emphasizes the least disruptive course of action, usually with the goal of leaving a child with his or her family, if at all possible. This approach is in contrast to the best interests approach.
Child Abuse
The physical, psychological, social, emotional, or sexual maltreatment of a child whereby the survival, safety, self-esteem, growth, and development of the person are endangered. Child abuse is usually divided into the following categories:
-Emotional Abuse: Which includes both emotional attacks and omissions
-Physical Abuse: Which includes any physical attack or omission that could cause injury
-Sexual Abuse: Which includes any sexual exploitation whether consented to or not
-Neglect: The sustained deprivation of necessary care
Risk Assessment
In the area of child protection, risk assessment refers to an educated prediction regarding the likelihood that a child will be maltreated based on a careful examination of pertinent data.
Duty to Report
Every member of society has a responsibility to report child abuse or neglect when there are reasonable grounds for believing a child may be in need of protection. People in professions that bring them into contact with children have a particular responsibility or duty to ensure that young people are safe.
Early Childhood Education
This refers to federal, publicly-funded programs for children. Each country regulates its own system of early education and development and countries vary widely in their provision of these services for families.
Universal Child Care Program
This model aims to provide high-quality, affordable, regulated, childhood education and care to all families. A universal child care program is demonstrated in Quebec where accessible child care is provided to many families.
Compassion Fatigue
The anxiety resulting from dealing with emotionally difficult cases under increased workplace pressure and increased workloads.
