Matter
Anything that has a
mass and takes up
space
Pure Substance
Any solid, liquid or gas that contains only one kind of particle
Heterogeneous Material
An uneven mixture that contains two or more substances; samples of heterogeneous mixture may have different properties
Solvent
A substance that dissolves a solute to form a solution
Concentrated Solution
A solution that contains a high amount of solute
Supersaturated SOlution
A solution that contains more of the solute than would be found in a saturated solution
Glass
A ceramic product made by mixing small amounts of limestone and potash with silica at high temperatures; a solution that is supercooled liquid
Turbidity
A measure of the amount of suspended solids in water, calculated using special meters
Hazardous Products
A substance that requires special handling and storage because it is dangerous to human health or to the environment
Mixture
Any substance that contains at least two pure substances
Raw Material
unprocessed material of any kind
Mechanical Mixture
a heterogeneous mixture; in a mechanical mixture at least two substances are visible
Solution
a homogeneous mixture made of a solvent and one or more solutes; in a solution, only one substance is visible, a solution can be a solid, liquid or gas
Unsaturated Solution
A solution in which more solutes can be dissolved at the the given temperature
Alloy
A homogeneous mixture of two or more metals and other substances in a solid solution
Plastic
A modern material manufactured in a mutli-step process, beginning with oil and gas
Soft Water
water that contains very small amounts of dissolved minerals; easily forms lather when mixed with soaps
WHMIS
(Workplace Hazardous Materials Info System) symbols found on hazardous products that identify the type of danger associated with the product and that provide information on safe handling
Particle Theory
A theory used to explain matter and heat transfer. It suggests that all matter is made up of tiny particles too small to be seen. These particles are constantly in motion because they have energy. The more energy they have the faster they move.
Homogeneous Material
A mixture that is the same throughout; all samples taken will have the same properties
Solutes
A substance that is dissolved in a solvent to form a solution
Dilute Solution
solution with room for more solute to be dissolved in it
Saturated Solution
A solution that contains the maximum amount of solute that the solvent can dissolve at the given temperature
Ceramics
A material manufactured by heating minerals and rocks; ceramics include pottery, bricks, cement, and glass
PH Scale
A gauge ranging 0 (strongly acidic) to 14 (strongly alkaline), used to express the acidity or alkalinity of a solution
Hard Water
Water that contains certain dissolved substances, such as magnesium, calcium and sulfur
Solubility
The maximum amount of a particular solute that can be dissolved in a particular solvent at a given temperature
