Square Knot

PURPOSE: the square knot is used to join the ends of two ropes of equal diameter under tension.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two interlocking bights


- The running ends are on opposite sides of the knot and on the same side as the standing end


- Minimum of 4 inch pigtails after overhand safeties

Figure of Eight Bend

PURPOSE: the figure of eight bend is used to join the ends of two ropes of equal diameter or similar diameter no more than 5mm difference in diameter.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two ropes running side by side in the shape of a figure eight


- The running ends are on the opposide sides of the knot and are on opposite sides of the standing end.


- Minimum of 4 inch pigtails and no twists

Water Knot

PURPOSE: Used to join the ends of tubular webbing.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two pieces of webbing running side by side in the shape of an overhand knot


- The running ends are on opposite ends of the knot and on the same side as the standing ends


- There are no twists in the webbing


- Minimum of 4 inch pigtails

Bowline

PURPOSE: Used to tie a rope around an anchor under alternating tension, or to form a fixed loop in a rope.




CHECKPOINTS:


- A bight around the standing end held in place by a loop


- The running end of the bight is on the inside of the fixed loop


- Minimum of 4 inch pigtails after the overhand safety

End of the Rope Clove Hitch

PURPOSE: To anchor the end of the rope under tension.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two turns around the anchor held in place by a diagonal locking bar opposite the direction of pull


- The running and standing ends exit the middle of the knot


- The running end is safetied to the standing end with two half hitches


- Minimum of 4 inch pigtails

Round Turn, Two Half Hitches

PURPOSE: Used to tie the end of a rope to an anchor. This knot requires constant tension.




CHECKPOINTS:


- A complete round turn around the anchor with no crosses


- Two half hitches held in place by a locking bar


- Minimum 4 inch pigtails



Middle of the Rope Clove Hitch

PURPOSE: Used to tie an anchor in the middle of a rope.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two turns around the anchor held in place by a diagonal locking bar


- The running and standing ends exit the middle of the knot

Double Figure of Eight

PURPOSE: Used to tie a fixed loop in a rope.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two ropes running side by side in the shape of a figure eight


- The knot forms a fixed loop in the rope


- Minimum of 4 inch pigtails and no twists

Middle of the Rope Prusik

PURPOSE: To tie a movable rope to a fixed rope in the middle of the rope.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two complete round turns around the anchor held in place by a perpendicular locking bar


- A double figure of eight knot stabilizes the knot no more than six inches from the prusik


- The ropes between the prusik and the double figure of eight share equal tension

Figure Eight Retrace

PURPOSE: To tie a climbing rope around a fixed object or climbing harness.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two ropes running side by side in the shape of a figure eight


- Knot forms a fixed loop around the fixed object or harness


Minimum of 4 inch pigtails and no twists

Triple Loop Bowline

PURPOSE: To form three fixed loops in a rope. Usually used as an anchor knot.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two bights around the standing end held in place by two loops


- The running ends of the bight is on the inside of the two fixed loops


- Minimum of 4 inch pigtails after the double overhand safety

End of the Rope Prusik

PURPOSE: To tie a movable rope to a fixed rope at the end of the rope.



CHECKPOINTS:- Two complete round turns around the anchor held in place by a perpendicular locking bar


- Stabilized by a safetied bowline no more than six inches from the prusik


- The ropes between the prusik and the bowline share equal tension


- Minimum 4 inch pigtails

Muntar Hitch

PURPOSE: To form a mechanical belay




CHECKPOINTS:


- A bight passing through a locked carabiner


- The closed end of the bight is around the standing or running end

Rappel Seat

PURPOSE: Used to make a harness for climbing or rappelling.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two overhands around the body above the hips


- Ropes not crossed between the legs


- A half hitch on each hip side over the waist rope


- Square knot on the guide hand side


- Minimum of 4 inch pigtails after the overhand safeties

Bowline on a Coil

PURPOSE: To tie a climber to the end of a climbing rope.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Minimum of 4 wraps around the body, not crossed


- A bight held in place by a loop


- The loop is underneath all wraps


- Centered on the middle-line of the body


- Minimum of 4 inch pigtails after the second overhand knot

Middle of the Rope Figure Eight Slip Knot

PURPOSE: To form an adjustable bight on a rope.




CHECKPOINTS:


- The knot is in the shape of a figure eight


- The adjustable bight passes through one loop of the figure eight

Two Loop Figure Eight Knot

PURPOSE: To form two adjustable fixed loops in a rope.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Two ropes running side by side in the shape of a figure eight


- The knot forms two adjustable fixed loops


- The fixed loops are adjustable by means of a common locking bar at the bottom of the knot


- Minimum of 4 inch pigtails and no twists

Butterfly Coil with Farmer's Tie Off

PURPOSE: To prepare a climbing rope for carrying on the body.




CHECKPOINTS:


- Coils uniform and even with no more than 6" difference


- Minimum of three wraps around the coils with the first wrap locking on itself


- A double bight through the top of the coils securing the standing ends and dressed down


- Minimum of one wrap around the body and coils tied off with an unsafetied square knot


- Minimum 4" pigtails

Web Wrap

PURPOSE: To attach a moveable piece of webbing to a fixed rope.




CHECKPOINTS:


- A bight locked over a minimum of three turns


- The knot is offset from the loop and completely out of wraps

Autoblock Knot

PURPOSE: To attach a moveable rope or webbing to a fixed rope that is easy to release.




CHECKPOINTS:


- A minimum of four turns aroudn the rope


- Both the bights are in the carabiner


- The joining knot is offset and out of turns
