compare sea turtles vs rays

-both are marine animals, have modified fins, and lay eggs. Sea turtles have a shell. Rays have “wings”. Rays are bottom feeders.

compare birds vs reptiles

-both lay eggs, have cloaca, some males do not have a private part. they both have lungs. birds can fly, reptiles can’t. birds have modified beaks. reptiles do not have hollow bones.

compare sharks vs whales

-both are marine animals, some whales are carnivores, they both dive great depths. whales have horizontal tails while sharks have vertical tails. sharks use gills, not lungs. whales give milk to their babies.

give 2 reasons why marine animals would have a limited range. explain each one and give examples.

most marine animals have limited range due to the water temperature. for example, most reptiles can’t live near the poles because their body temperature would plummet and they would die.

what is an adaptation?

a change or modification found in animals bodies that exist to serve a purpose and help the animal with one aspect of their environment (food, temperature, and physical changes).

describe 3 adaptations in birds

their modified beaks based on what they eat, their feathers for flying, and their webbed feet to help them swim.

why are whales tails flat, while fish tails are vertical?

whales’ tails are horizontal due t convergent evolution. the whales’ ancestors arrived land walking on four limbs and they needed to have a tail that would push against the water. their spine made it efficient for their flukes to be horizontal.

what adaptations allow for whales to dive to great depths?

whales can manage to store a vast amount of oxygen, and they also have a lot of blood and myoglobin in their muscles.

describe 4 ways that animals can manage heat

pokilotherms: same temperature as environment. ectotherms: rely on heat from environment. endotherms: retain heat through internal means. homeotherm: body temperature is constant.

what effects do the four ways animals manage heat have on the animals’ range and lifestyle?

it causes for animals, depending on what way they manage their heat as a species, to live where they can easily manage their temperature. for example, penguins are endothermic (warm-blooded) and they live mostly in cold climates such as Antarctica.
