asexual reproduction

is the process resulting in the production of genetically identical offspring from one parent, without the fusion of gametes

sexual reproduction

is the process involving the fusion of two gametes to form a zygote. it produces genetically dissimilar offspring

petal

modified leaves that form the most obvious part of the flower. all petals make up the corolla together

sepal

are modified leaves which enclose and protect the flower in the bud stage. all the sepals together make up the calyx

some flowers such as the Hibiscus flower have another layer of floral leaves outside the sepal, which makes up the epicalyx

receptacle

is the enlarged end of the flower stalk which bears the other parts of the flower

pedicel

is the flower stalk

stamen

anther:

- consists of two lobes, each containing two pollen sacs. the anther produces and stores pollen grains in the two sacs. when the anther is mature, it splits open to release the pollen grains.

pollen grains:

- are haploid as they are produced by meiosis.

- each grain contains a male gamete which is the nucleus of the pollen grain

filament:

- is the stalk that holds the anther in a suitable position to disperse the pollen

carpel

stigma:

- swollen structure at the end of the style

- receives pollen grain

- mature stigma secretes a sugary fluid that stimulates pollen grains to germinate

style:

- is the stalk that connects the stigma to the ovary

- holds the stigma in a suitable position to trap pollen grains

ovary:

- stucture that will develop into a fruit after fertilisation

- produces and protects one or more ovules which develops into a seed upon fertilisation.

- ovule produces a female gamete or ovum by meiosis

- ovule is attached to a region in the ovary called the placenta by a stalk called the funicle

pollination

is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma

self-pollination

is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of the same flower or of a different flower on the same plant

cross pollination

is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of one plant to the stigma of a flower in another plant which is of the same species
