Aristotle

In the 16th Century he pondered the seed of human consciousness believing that consciousness was in the heart not in the head. Apperently he was wrong tho.

With his student Edward Titchner they proposed and tried to promote strucuralism.

Addicted to cocaine and cigars died by suicide. Pain from his mouth cancer too much.


How scientific psychology got it's start.

Argued that if Chemists & Physicists could break down all matter N2 simple elements & structures .....why can't it be done for the brain.


He tried understand the structures human consciousness by asking patients to look inward. Asking them how they felt after doing different everyday activities.. Structuralism relied to heavily on introspection. It became to subjective and was short lived.

Proposed a new set of questions like why do we behave, and think the way we do. This led to the focus on Functionalism. The function of behavior. Inspired by the Charles Darwin idea that adaptive behaviours are conserved by the evolutionary process.

Focused on the function of behaviour.


1890 Published his book "The Principal's of Psychology"


He Called Psychology the science of mental life.

Sigmund Frued

Greatest psychologist of all time.


Most influential and controversial thinker of his time. Started his own practice specializing in nervous disorders in 1886 where he witnessed his friend Josef Brouer treat a patient (Anna O.) with a new talking cure. And Free Association & Dream Interpretation became a big deal.Believed the subconscious was the key to recovery. And that our minds are controlled by our subconscious motives.


Wrote the book


Interpretation of Dream and published 20 more book before he died in 1939.

Believed cocaine and cigars helped him think. Died by suicide. Couldn't take pain 4m jaw cancer.

Franz Joseph Gall

Invented phrenology. Believed people's behaviours were related directly to ridges on their skull.

Carl Jyung
