State the exception of atomic radius in p block |
The atomic radius of Ga is less than Al even though it is in the next period of Al. This is due to poor shielding of 10 d electrons. |
State the exception of decrease of ionization enthalpy in p block. |
The decrease is related to the increase in atomic radius. The observed discontinuity in the ionization enthalpy values between aluminum and gallium and indium and thallium due to the inability of d and f electrons which have low shielding effect, to compensate for the increase in nuclear charge. |
Why does boron have unusually high melting point? |
Due to very strong crystalline lattice. |
How does the density vary in the boron family? |
It increases down the group from boron to thallium. |
Why does boron form covalent compounds? |
Due to small size of boron ionization enthalpy is very high and hence is forced to make covalent compounds. |
What is the trend of relative stability of +1 oxidation state ? |
It increases for heavier elements Al<Ga<In<Tl |
What is Fajans rule |
It is a rule which discusses the partial covalent character of ionic bonds. |
