Kwashiorkor is a disease caused by protein deficiency. Due to a lack of protein in a persons diet there will be nothing in the abdomen to absorb or remove excess water therefore causing a swollen abdomen. Kwashiorkor is common in developing countries because people may not get enough protein in their diet. The reasons why are complex, but include:overpopulation, limited investment in farming methods.
