15% of all cases of leukemia in US. Average onset 40 to 50 years old. Malignant granulocytes that carry a unique chromosomal abnormality, the Philadelphia chromsome (Ph+). Abnormality results in new protein product that spurs cell proliferation and reduces apotosis. Poor prognosis.

CML - Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

Adults comprise 80% of the cases. Has several sub-types (M0 through M7) and relates to the stage the abnormal cell is in when it stops developing. Presents with bone pain, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and increased susceptibility to infection. Onset of symptoms is abrupt. Mortality 50% children, 30% adults

AML - Acute Myeloid Leukemia
|

Malignant disorder of the lymphoid cell ineage (80% B cell, and remainder T cell). Primarily a disorder of children. Most common malignancy and 2nd leading cause of death in this population. Peak incidence 3 to 7 years old. Onset abrupt. Bone pain, dever, infection, loss of appetite, fatigue, abdominal pain. Spleen, liver, and lymph nodes enlarged. Highly curable in pediatric population. Less so in adults.

ALL - Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia/Lymphoma
|
|
Rare, chronic type of leukemia. Highly treatable. Presents at a median age of 55, 5 to 1 predominance of mailes, B-cell phenotype. Cells with hairlike projections on their surface. In the peripheral blood. Splenomegaly is a commmon finding.

Hairy Cell Leukemia
|
|
Malignant disorder of mature, antibody-secreting B lymphocytes, called plasma cells. Invades bone and forms multiple tumor sites. Other tissues may be targeted (lymph nodes, liver, spleen, kidneys). Exclusively in Adults. Usually > 40 yrs. of age.Excessive production of antibody fragments. Can accumulate in kidney and bones and cause dcamage. Onset slow and insidious.

Plasma Cell Myeloma (also called Multiple Myeloma)

30% of malignant lymphoma. Across all ages. Incidence and worse prognosis is higher in males. Characterized by Reed-Sternberg cells which originate from B cells in the germinal center of lymph nodes. Predictable spreading. Often localized Epstein Barr virus thought to be the pathogenesis.

Hodgkin Disease

Originates from B cells in germinal center of lymph nodes. Noncontiguous spreading. Gastrointestinal tract, testes, bone marrow involved. Bone marrow and Liver involvement common, Rarely localized. Unpredictable. Tough to treat
