What are macrolides?
Macrolides slows the growth of micro-organisms by inhibiting protein synthesis
What are some examples of macrolide drugs?
-Erytrhomycin (E-Mycin)
-Azithromycin (Zithromax)
What are macrolide drugs used to treat?
-Useful in clients who have a penicillin allergy, such as prophylaxis against rheumatic fever and bacterial endocarditis
-Whooping cough (pertussi)
-Acute diphtheria
-Chlamydia infections
-Upper respiratory tract infections
What are some possible adverse reactions that may occur with macrolides?
-GI discomfort (nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain - clients can administer eryhromycin with meals if GI upset occurs)
-Hepatoxicity (abdominal pain, lethargy, jaundice)
-Prolonged QT interval causing dysrhythmias and possible sudden cardiac death - clients who have dysrhythmias)
-Clients who have a pre-existing liver disease should avoid taking erythromycin (macrolides)
Are macrolides administered on an empty stomach?
Yes, 1 hour before or 2 hours after with a full glass of water, unless GI upset occurs
