What is culture sensitive therapy? |
This is an outlook that views the unique aspects of each culture from a strengths perspective, and doesn’t assume the values of the therapist are ideal. |

Do we believe all people from the same culture are homogenous? |
No! Many factors influence family culture. Such as education level, social class, religion, state of acculturation |

Can different members of each family be at different levels of acculturation? |
Yes! It can even be a concern for parents who feel their children are leaving their culture behind |

Hernandez, Siegel and Ameida 2009) developed a cultural context model for working with families from different backgrounds. It’s three processes are: |
1. The development of critical consciousness 2. A depended sense of empowerment 3. Accountability |

Family therapists need to distinguish between family patterns that are: |
Universal: common to a wide variety of families Cultural specific: common to a group (such as African Americans) Idiosyncratic: unique to this particular family - each family needs to be seen for its uniqueness, not defined by their ethnicity or other major element |

Ruling class, Professional-managerial class Working class Underclass -there are long term dynamics in families and extends beyond income. Differences in attitude, perspective and interpretation based on class identity. |

What is an under organized family? |
Opposed to disorganized families, these are those that live in situations through generations that learn to view as normal their own impotence. -any effort to equate poverty and psychological deviance must account for the harsh and confining social conditions associated with being poor. |

What is multiculturalism? |
A systematic perspective that looks at interactional patterns -doesn’t see cultural differences as dysfunctional Uses cultural sensitivity -ask clients to help you understand their culture Uses assessment |
