What was Unionism?
A belief in the constitutional connection between Britain and Ireland.
How was Unionism transformed?
The Unionists believed HR for Ireland would = loss of individual liberty, absolute insecurity of property, & negation of everything they cared for affecting the welfare of the country.
What pulled Unionism apart?
3 REASONS!:
- Sourthern Unionism - affected by rise of mass politics; most new voters were Catholics and likely to support HR.
- Decline of Landlordism. Successive Land reforms = decline in standing and influence of unionist landowning class.
- Realignment of Northern Unionists. Strengthened by the rise of mass politics = creation of Ulster Unionists.
What was the significance of the 1911 Parliament Act?
Removed House of Lords ability to veto.
When was the 3rd Home Rule Bill proposed?
1912
What was the Blenheim Palace Speech?
Asquith visited Dublin to tremendous reception to give an nationalist speech SOOOO as a reaction the unionists organised conserv. leader, Andrew Bonar Law, to give a speech at Blenheim Palace.
What was Ulster day 1912?
It was a show of political strength and solidarity to, hopefully, force the Liberal Gov.'s (Asquith's) hand.
What was the Ulster Volunteer Force?
A paramilitary organisation - flexed its military muscle as the tension over HR grew.
What was the Curragh Mutiny?
A public relations disaster for the Gov. The mutiny gave the impression that the gov. would not be able to rely on the army to enforce Home Rule in Ulster. The episode seemed to confirm to nationalists that the Army was against them & Unionist suspicions that the government planned to use the army to force HR on them.
What was the nationalists response to the UVF?
Some, with a distorted logic, welcomed it as it was not just a challenge to themselves, but also a challenge to the British government!!
