What was Home Rule?
Home Rule meant different things to different groups
Why did Gladstone introduce the 1st Home Rule Bill?
His son (& private secretary), Herbert, leaked info to press - Hawarden Kite = forced Gladderz hand
1885 elections = clear message of strength of Parnell's party - Gladderz feared this could lead to them setting up their own Parli. in Dublin
What was the impact on the Libs?
It split the party. One wing led by Lord Hartington who stood against HR, as they believed it undermined the concept of Empire. (The other wing was obv. Gladderz.)
What did the Home Rule Bill propose?
- Ireland granted an assembely with two Orders of representatives, but Westminster retains control over defence, Empire, & Crown.
- Irish Parliment would levy its own direct taxes to fund Home Rule
- No Irish MPs in West Minster despite the fact that Westminster had control over various parts of Irish taxation
Defeat of the Bill & Unionists' reaction?
Bill was defeated by 30 votes & Gladderz resigned as PM. Unionist Ulster & rest of Ireland divide broadening thanks to 1886 General Election
Coercion? 'Killing Home Rule with kindness' - Lord Salisbury's conserv. gov.
In response to 'Plan of Campaign' which threatened the start of another land war came a policy of coercion and reform. Coercion through Perpetual Crimes Act (1887) = imprisonment for land agitators. Police given greater powers (as EG'ed in Mitchelstown Massacre (Sept 1887) - three protestors shot dead).
How did Parnell come to an end?
Campaign to 'smear' his reputation by making him seem sympathetic to violent nationalism - this was cleared up when Piggot was found out.
His real downfall came from his private life - O'Shea Affair.
What was 'The Split' ?
(Parnellites Vs. Anti- Parnellites. P. supported by Fenians & Urban based MPs. But then died in 1891.)

SPLIT= Irish National League (John Redmond Vs. Irish National Federation (John Dillon)
What did the 2nd Home Rule Bill propose?
An Irish Assembely, judges appointed by irish gov.
Difference to HRB1 = 80 Irish MPs @ WestMinster & able to vote on Bills relating to Ireland
What was Constructive Unionism?
The idea that reform rather than coercion would strengthen the Union Conservative tactics
How did 'Constructive Unionism' end?
2 REASONS:
1) Conserv. party beaten by liberals in late 1905
2) Undermined by a loose alliance of nationalists led by John Dillon & the Ulster Unionists
